Welcome to The Cornwall Independent School
Key Stage One comprises of Years One and Two. The National Curriculum begins with Year One - the school bases its teaching broadly on this curriculum. French is introduced at Year One and continues through school. Lessons are conducted in a friendly and purposeful working atmosphere. They provide good opportunities for the pupils to increase their knowledge and understanding, practise new skills and work both collaboratively and independently.
In Key Stage One, structured play is seen as an important part of the children’s development. Attractive classroom displays provide information to help learning and celebrate pupils’ achievements. Specialist teachers work with the youngest pupils teaching specialist subjects as the timetable allows.
Key Stage Two encompasses Years Three, Four, Five and Six. Once in KS2 there is greater emphasis on subjects being taught by specialists. Class size remains low with numbers capped at twelve. Children are taught in a supportive learning environment by qualified, conscientious and hard-working teachers. Children are given the opportunity to explain their ideas and be involved in activities. There is a well equipped and effectively organised ICT suite, which ensures that the children are able to access the digital world and the opportunities this provides.
Pupils are expected to behave responsibly and to work hard. The school aims to develop pupils’ self-esteem and self-confidence.
